Basilan mayor killed, another mayor wounded in gun attack in Zambo

ZAMBOANGA CITY (MindaNews / 06 Dec) — Mayor Darussalam Lajid of Al-Barka, Basilan was killed while Mayor Alih Salih of Akbar town from the same province was wounded after still unidentified gunmen attacked them Monday morning shortly after disembarking from a seacraft at the Balisawan Seaside here, authorities said.

In a phone interview, Basilan Gov. Jim Salliman condemned the attack against the two mayors as he urged authorities to conduct a thorough investigation to bring the suspects behind the bars of justice the soonest time possible.

The governor called for the creation of a special investigating team to focus on the immediate resolution of the case.

Salliman said in a statement that two security escorts of Salih were also wounded in the attack.

However, one of his aides, Barad Nuruddin, was declared dead upon arrival by attending physicians at the Ciudad Medical Zamboanga, MindaNews learned.

Mayor Lajid expired shortly after they were brought to the hospital while Mayor Salih is now in stable condition.

An initial report from Police Station 11 showed that the victims arrived here at past 8 a.m. from Basilan province aboard a seacraft.

They were walking towards a mosque when the suspects fired on them.
